Field Experiment #12

Leslie's Results
Sometimes my sketching turns into journaling about the object I'm sketching. Sometimes it's overheard conversations or observations about the world around me. This was a week where my word observations added to my visual observations.

Jane's Results

This week I've been working a lot on the next issue of PioP. Many of the article this time encourage experimentation and that has influenced how I drew in my field note this week. The Field Notes book is a convenient size to have with you at all times but drawing small on a regular basis tends to make your art tight. I like to loosens up my work from time to time so I decided to draw in my Field Notes this week by placing the book on a table and standing over the book holding my pens at the very end. These are my results.

Field Experiment #11

Leslie's Results
I'm still drawing the salt water taffy. I added to it a key chain that another coworker brought back from her travels to Brazil. NPR had a recent piece on the "Ghost Army," which a friend told me about and I decided to read about. Fascinating. I drew their logo and one of the rubber tanks.

Every morning with my coffee I' sat at the back porch and drew my husband's fisherman's lamp. The thing is hideous. But my husband really likes it so he was banished from the living room but resides on the porch. One day he will live in a man cave. (When Tom gets a man cave). I wrote a story about his life. (The fisherman's not Tom)

I worked really hard this week. By Friday night I was burnt. We got chinese food. I opened one of my fortune cookies and sure enough, Tom found a typo. Tom, who is a printer, (and one of our proofreaders for PioP) finds typos all the time.

Challenge! One Up!

Everyone knows someone who always has to "one up" everyone around them. Here's your chance to come up with some witty come backs for the person who one ups you and makes you feel like crap.

Fiedl Experiment #10

Leslie's Results
It's hard to believe we have been doing this for 10 weeks already. Time flies when you're having fun!

My coworker goes to SLC every year for vacation and every year she brings back really great salt water taffy. I'm on a diet and needed to slow my consumption so I decided to take a moment and sketch the taffy. I've been sketching them ever since. What a great and variable model for sketching. I can flip the taffy on a different side or twist it in another direction so each piece is a model a dozen times over!

This week I had a Field notes scare! From Wednesday through Friday I couldn't find my book. When I finally did find it the first thing I did was put my address and phone number in the front and grabbed many of my random sketchbooks and did the same.  I know all of the books about journaling advise to do that but it one of those things I put off, up there with getting proper insurance or creating a will.

One page of this sketch was made while sitting in a park in Salem looking at the cool old buildings. The other was made while sitting on my back porch referencing the first sketch.
I really like the stone window sills of these old houses. And Salem actually has a window box contest so they are prevalent everywhere. But what I really like about this sketch is the viewer-you-can't really tell which is from life and which is from my head, because actually they both are from my head which is what is so cool about art.

Field Experiment #9

Leslie's Results
This week I used my Field Notes as a spot to think. I had to block out some of the info with post it notes because the info is not ready to be released into the world yet. I've got some stuff planned, it should be fun. I also took a nice long hot bath on a cold day here, it was great and totally relaxing. I highly recommend a long hot bath for thinking purposes. I sketched a tube of scrub.

When I look at my Field notes I notice that while I have developed a regular habit of drawing, I've gotten into a rut of where I draw. Once again I am drawing a park bench in the park at lunchtime.

But I've also been incorporating ideas and other notes as well. This was a simple idea I had about organizing at work. So simple once I wrote it down but it has made a huge difference already.
